Co-op Youth Story Showcase

Written by
Want to uncover a story about a co-op or credit union in your community!

The United Nations has declared 2012 The Year of Co-operatives (YAY!!) To celebrate, the Co-operative Enterprise Council of NB (CECNB) is recruiting young people full of curiosity, passion, creativity and artistic skills. Co-operatives have a fascinating history in NB and most people don't even know about it! For example, did you know that:
  • The Sussex Co-op is the oldest co-operative in the entire world?!!!!
  • A group of students started their own co-op theatre company to create work for themselves and it has become one of Moncton's most popular theatres?
  • First nations fishermen recently joined together to establish a fishing co-op that employs local people and invests its profits back into youth and children in their community?
  • A co-op in New Brunswick is building the first virtual map of human knowledge for the Web?
There are more than 200 co-ops in NB with mysteries to unravel and stories to tell and we think young people are just the ones to do it. Join us to uncover amazing stories of co-operation, interview suspected collaborators, and work together with other to tell a story through an art form such as music, dance, a play, poetry, a video, animation, graffiti, or anything else that you come up with. Then share your co-operative stories across the globe (yes, we mean the entire world)!
Who is eligible?
Young people in NB aged 13-25. You don't need to be a member of a co-op - just curious about how co-operatives have contributed to your community and willing to work with others to tell a story through art.
What are we doing?
There are 4 parts to this project.
    • Sniff out your story!
Register online by May 4, 2012. Decide what co-op story you want to tell. Don't worry if you don't know that yet. There are lots of awesome co-ops and credit unions involved and our project Co-ordinator can help match you up.
    • Learn new skills and have a blast at the ARTventure Weekend!
Before coming to the ARTventure, you and your fellow snoops will be connected to an "informer" who can help you find out the real story behind the co-op or credit union you have chosen or have been assigned to. Then, you'll bring your story ideas to a weekend ARTventure on June 23-24 where professionals in film, music, dance, drama, poetry, animation, and other creative arts will help you shape your story into art!
    • Produce your art piece!
Take what you learn from the ARTventure and work with your group to finish your art piece and get it ready to submit it to the exhibition and to other contests across Canada and the world!
    • Showcase your art!
The Big Splash: An Artistic Exhibition of Co-operative Youth will be held October 15th - 20th and will showcase your art to the public. We expect this exhibition will draw lots of media attention. Your work will also be shown on a Virtual Trade Show(Cooperatives: They Work) that will reach across the world! And if you're interested we will also help you submit it to national and international competitions that have been set up to celebrate the International Year of the Co-operative. To top all that off, some youth may be selected to participate in a youth conference in St. John's, Newfoundland and you have a chance to win an iPad andother prizes!
Other reasons you might want to get involved?
In addition to all the fun you'll have and the opportunity to create something really special with other youth, there are lots of other reasons to get involved:
  • It's free!
  • You'll learn new techniques in the creative arts from professionals.
  • You'll uncover a fascinating part of your community's history.
  • Your group's art piece will tour across Atlantic Canada and get lots of exposure to the public and media. It will also be shown worldwide through a virtual trade show.
  • You'll get to meet youth from all over the province and work with talented artists.
  • YOU COULD WIN AN IPAD!!! All participants will have their names in a draw for a new iPad! There will also be lots of other prizes!
How do you get involved?
Register before May 11th to guarantee your spot. If you are part of a group, you can all apply together or if you don't yet have a group just let us know where you live and we'll hook you up with others in your community.

National Youth Climate Call to Action

Written by

We are young people from across Canada, asking you to listen.

As the arctic is melting before our eyes andas small island nations disappear beneath rising sea levels, we see our government failing to act on the greatest crisis of our time. We are crossing the tipping point, knowing that this is the world that we are inheriting, but we refuse to pass this crisis on to our children.

This is a call to action.

We know that the enormous challenges we currently face are also powerful opportunities, and that the solutions to the climate and energy crisis can also pave the way to recovery from our current economic crisis, through the creation of jobs, a renewed investment in arts, culture and education, and a shift towards an economic and political system that reflects the needs of our generation. Our country must take this chance, protecting all Mother Earth and getting to work on building healthy, fair and sustainable communities.

Our demands are simple:

1. Justice across generations Young people today, and future generations, have the right to live on a healthy planet that is free from the dangerous impacts of climate change.

2. Justice between people of the same generation Climate change is disproportionately harming the health and livelihoods of those least able to influence decisions made at national and international levels. Efforts to tackle climate change must take into account the needs of those at greatest risk, such as Indigenous peoples, women, people of colour, workers and communities across the Global South, and to do this effectively, decision-makers need to start listening to their voices. Such efforts must  address the injustices we see across the world today, not enhance existing inequalities.  Everyone deserves a healthy community and environment in which they can live safely.

3. Youth participation and deliberation in government decision-making
As youth, we are inheriting the legacies of past generations. The impacts of climate change and the responsibility for mitigating them will fall squarely on our shoulders. Policies on climate change mitigation and adaptation will have long-lasting impacts on the lives of young people and we must be actively involved in shaping them.

4. Just transition to a Green Economy
Communities – urban and rural, Indigenous peoples, and workers must not be forced to choose between making a living and preserving the planet. As more and more youth struggle to find meaningful employment and pay down mounting debt, we expect an immediate strategy for a just and timely transition towards meaningful, green jobs for all.

5. Energy for today, tomorrow and the future
Fossil fuel extraction is feeding the system of production and consumption that in turn fuels climate change. Justice across and between generations, on the other hand, requires an immediate plan to transition to a zero carbon economy.  As a nation with a large supply of oil and gas reserves, it is our responsibility to become a leader in transitioning away from fossil fuels in order to become a leader in renewable energy production.

Youth in Canada are already building the solutions we need, from local food production and sustainable transportation, to a green and just economy that provides stable employment for people of all generations while addressing the moral and legal obligations to reduce our emissions, reduce waste, limit our consumption of energy and work together to create real solutions to the climate crisis.

What’s missing? Your support.

Join us.
